Positive Behavior Interventions and Support
What is PBIS?
El Roble uses Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) to help all students attain the social skills needed for success at school and beyond. PBIS is a proactive, school-wide approach to building a safe and positive learning environment by teaching and reinforcing expected behaviors.
This framework uses a tiered system of support, increasing interventions based on students’ individual needs. Rather than focusing on punishment, PBIS emphasizes prevention by encouraging positive behavior and addressing issues before they escalate. While the primary goal is to promote positive choices, appropriate consequences are also used to help students reflect and grow from their experiences.
Tier 1: Schoolwide Support
Tier 1 PBIS includes the expectations and systems we put in place for all students. These include:
Clear behavior expectations taught and modeled by staff.
Positive reinforcement for following expectations
Consistent routines and consequences
Regular opportunities to build community and focus on social-emotional learning
The goal for Tier 1 is to prevent most behavior issues by creating a positive and predictable school culture where students know what is expected and feel supported.
At El Roble, we teach and model our core values of PRIDE:
Positivity
Respect
Integrity
Determination
Empathy
At the start of the year—and throughout the school year—students are taught what PRIDE looks like in different settings (classrooms, hallways, lunch, etc.) so students clearly understand expectations.
When students demonstrate these values in their behavior, they can earn Minga PRIDE Points. Minga PRIDE Points are our school’s reward system. Students can use their points to earn privileges, prizes, or special experiences throughout the year.
All staff members use the same PBIS expectations and rewards so that students experience consistency and fairness throughout the school.
Tier 2: Targeted Support
Tier 2 of the Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) framework provides additional, targeted support for students who may not respond fully to the general Tier 1 strategies but do not yet require intensive, individualized interventions. These supports are still positive, proactive, and focused on skill-building, but they are more tailored to meet the specific needs of small groups or individual students.
Examples of Tier 2 supports include:
Small group check-ins or social skills groups:
Behavior contracts or goal-setting plans
Increased feedback and adult support throughout the day
The goal of Tier 2 support is to help students develop the confidence, self-awareness, and behavioral skills they need to succeed both in the classroom and in everyday life. These interventions are designed to catch challenges early and provide the scaffolding needed to prevent more significant issues from developing.
